Holbein and England (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies)

Holbein and England (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies) by Susan Foister from Paul Mellon Centre BA

One of the greatest artists of sixteenth-century Europe, Hans Holbein the younger earned high acclaim for his work both in the city of Basel and in England for Henry VIII and other patrons. This book is the first to explore the full range of the artist’s English body of work as well as the relation of this work to the visual and material culture of Tudor England. Providing a detailed account of the paintings, drawings, and woodcuts that Holbein produced in England, the book demonstrates convincingly that that country was not as remote from a common European culture as is often assumed. Rather, it was an unmistakable part of that culture.
Susan Foister discusses not only Holbein's well-known portraits but also his decorative paintings and murals, now lost, his designs for goldsmiths, and the works that can be associated with the English Reformation. In addition, she considers Holbein's religious and secular images, his techniques and practices, his status as an official court painter, and a variety of other intriguing topics.

One of the greatest artists of sixteenth-century Europe, Hans Holbein the younger spent much of his career in England and painted everyone of note in Henry VIII’s realm. In this generously illustrated book, Susan Foister presents an original account of how the masterful Renaissance artist held up a mirror to the cultural life of Tudor England.

Five Centuries of British Painting: From Holbein to Hodgkin (World of Art)

Five Centuries of British Painting: From Holbein to Hodgkin (World of Art) by Andrew Wilton from Thames & Hudson

Although Britain has played a dominant role in European history, its schools of painting have not always been seen as contributing significantly to the great Continental tradition. In this new book, the eminent art historian Andrew Wilton provides an enlightening look at the glories and achievements of British art over the past five centuries. He traces the story of British painting from its hesitant beginnings under the influence of Holbein through its maturity in the time of Hogarth and Reynolds, when it reflected a prosperous society with growing Imperial influence. He then explores the pioneering role of Constable and Turner in the revolutions of the Romantic period, and the enigmatic position of artists in Victorian England, when a stiff moral code came into conflict with the uncertainties of the age of Darwin. In the twentieth century, Wilton shows how the new ideas of Modernism were explored by distinctive personalities from the Bloomsbury Group to Francis Bacon and the School of London. 200 illustrations, 90 in color.

Hans Holbein the Younger: The Years in Basel, 1515-1532 by Hans Holbein from Prestel Publishing

Hans Holbein the Younger: The Basle Years, 1515-1532 Christian Müller, Editor

Holbein is perhaps best known as the court painter of Henry VIII, but before he moved to England, this sixteenth-century German artist was a celebrated portraitist and painter of religious scenes and altar pieces. Focusing on a particularly fertile period in HolbeinÂ’s career, this book features paintings, drawings and sketches that the artist completed in Basle, Switzerland. There, HolbeinÂ’s talent blossomed as he was awarded numerous commissions to paint the leading figures of the Reformation, including Erasmus of Rotterdam. In fact, it was Erasmus who recommended him for a position in London. Scholarly essays and a brief biography reflect the latest research on the life and work of this important artist.

Christian Müller is a curator at the Kupferstichkabinett in Basle, Switzerland.

Hans Holbein the Younger: A Guide to Research (Garland Reference Library of the Humanities)

Hans Holbein the Younger: A Guide to Research (Garland Reference Library of the Humanities) by Erika Michael from Routledge

In this quincentennial year of Holbein's birth, this is the first comprehensive annotated bibliography of texts relating to this important Northern European Renaissance artist, with an accompanying historiographic essay on various aspects of Holbein's reception.
The first part of the book, "Some Notes on Reception," contains overviews of texts about specific works such as The Dead Christ, The Solothurn Madonna, and The Meyer Madonna. Other themes addressed include the perception of Holbein's character and his place among other Renaissance masters, his work as a portraitist, his use of illusion, authenticity controversies, and a brief chronicle of Holbein collectors. Previously unaddressed topics include Holbein's influence on later artists, and his impact on fiction, including his influence seen in the works of writers such as Dostoevsky, Henry James and Edith Wharton. This part of the book also contains synopses of the most significant and recent Holbein scholarship. These vignettes constitute a multi-dimensional approach to Holbein reception, sharpened by selected quotations from his critics.
The second part of the book is a comprehensive listing of over 2,500 bibliographic citations for works dealing with Holbein and his oeuvre, each accompanied by an annotation outlining the authors' principal contributions. The range of material covered includes not only books and scholarly journals but also newspapers and other popular publications. Individual sections include texts dealing with primary sources, monographs, compendia, and exhibition catalogues. Others are devoted to texts about Holbein's paintings, drawings and prints, as well as to iconography, technical studies, patronage, collections, influences on Holbein, and Holbein reception. Masters of the Renaissance

Masters of the Renaissance by Dan Kretschmer

The Renaissance was a return to classical ideas. This was a period of time when humanity itself was experiencing a rebirth of new growth in all fields of human endeavor. The artists of this period were highly creative and were using some innovative techniques new to the time such as linear perspective.

This book is an informative guide of one of the richest periods in art history. It begins with an introduction to the history of art from the Stone Age to the Late Middle Ages. It goes on to describe the cultural phenomenon known as the Renaissance and chronicles some of the advancements of painting, sculpture, and architecture.

Then it gives a look at 18 of the Renaissance's most notable artists: Arcimboldo, Bosch, Botticelli, Bramante, Bruegel, Brunelleschi, Correggio, Donatello, Durer, Fouquet, Giorgione, Grunewald, Holbein, Leonardo, Mantegna, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian.

Painting on Light: Drawings and Stained Glass in the Age of Durer and Holbein

Painting on Light: Drawings and Stained Glass in the Age of Durer and Holbein by Barbara Butts from Getty Publications

The names Albrecht Durer and Hans Holbein the Younger evoke the dazzling accomplishments of Renaissance panel painting and printmaking, but they may not summon images of stained glass. Nevertheless, Durer, Holbein, and their southern German and Swiss contemporaries designed some of the most splendid works in the history of the medium. This lavish volume is a comprehensive survey of the contribution to stained glass made by these extraordinarily gifted artists and the equally talented glass painters who rendered their compositions in glass.
Included are discussions of both monumental church windows and smaller-scale stained-glass panels made for cloisters, civic buildings, residences, and private chapels. The subjects of these rarely seen drawings and panels range from religious topics to secular themes, including love, planets, hunts, and battles.
Focusing on stained glass produced in Germany and Switzerland from about 1495 to 1530, Painting on Light includes drawings by Durer, Holbein, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Baldung Grien, Jorg Breu the Elder, Hans Burgkmair, Urs Graf, Hans von Kulmbach, Hans Leu the Younger, Niklaus Manuel Deutsch, Hans Schaufelein, Hans Weiditz, and others. This informative book is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Getty Museum from July 11 through September 24, 2000, and from November 7, 2000, to January 4, 2001, at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

The Ambassadors' Secret: Holbein and the World of the Renaissance

The Ambassadors' Secret: Holbein and the World of the Renaissance by John North from Hambledon & London

The Ambassadors' Secret is a radical reinterpretation of one of the world¿s most famous paintings. Holbein¿s celebrated portrait of two French diplomats at the court of Henry VIII has usually been linked to the political and religious unrest of the day. John North shows that the painting has a very different, and previously undetected, central theme and many other meanings. Far from being random, the objects in The Ambassadors are deliberately, and very accurately, placed. In revealing exactly what they, and the painting, mean, The Ambassadors' Secret opens a remarkable window on the world of the Renaissance.

The Ambassadors--the famous portrait of two diplomats visiting Henry VIII's court in London 1533--has long been celebrated by art historians. Traditionally the painting has been seen as representing the political and religious unrest of its day. Now, historian John North, author of Stonehenge: A New Interpretation of Prehistoric Man and the Cosmos, once again uses his investigative skills to reinterpret history. In this radical reinterpretation of the painting John North shows that the work has a very different and previously undetected, central theme. Far from being random, the objects are very deliberately placed. Part international riddle, part art history, and part French history, the book opens a remarkable window on the world of the Renaissance.
