The Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525–1569) is considered to be the first Western landscape and genre painter. He has been especially beloved through the centuries for his paintings of peasant scenes. Along with an essay by Manfred Sellink, this book reprints the first biography of Bruegel, in facsimile and translation, written by Karel van Mander around 1604. The annotated catalogue includes all forty paintings and seventy drawings attributed to Bruegel in color, with numerous details, as well as his seventy-five prints.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Prints and Drawings

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/30-1569) was a remarkable draftsman and designer of prints as well as a great painter. His independent drawings and designs for engravings and etchings, which were carried out by the leading printmakers of his day, have fascinated scholars and the general public alike since they were created. They have recently been the subject of research that has given rise to a reevaluation of the parameters of Bruegel's oeuvre. The new scholarship has been brought to bear on the texts in the present volume. An international group of experts presents essays on the artist's life, his contributions as a draftsman and as a printmaker, his iconography and social and political context, and the posthumous survival of his art. The authors also illuminate Bruegel's genius in discussions of individual prints and drawings. Each of these works is illustrated and many comparative illustrations are also included.

The Brueghels

The one hundred views of Edo by Ando Totikaro, better known as Hiroshige (1797-1858), is one of the most famous artistic productions of all time. The art of the Ukiyo-e School or Popular Painting was the expression of a singular and isolated civilization. It had considerable influence on European art, and both Monet and Van Gogh drew much inspiration from it. Hiroshige was the pupil of Toyohiro in Edo. When his teacher died, Hiroshige moved to Kyoto and set up his own studio. The sets of prints he created there, many of them views on the Tokaido road, made him famous and early European visitors began buying and bringing them back to Europe, setting off a craze for Japanese art. The compositions in this series of prints never repeat themselves and are of astonishing diversity. The contrast of planes, the richness of motifs and the splendor of the colors reveal the extraordinary talent of Hiroshige.

This study is dedicated to the analysis of the artistic qualities of a selection of the prints in Russian museums, and also of earlier works. The history of the Ukiyo-e style in Hiroshige and other practioners is discussed. The illustrations are accompanied by explanations and poetic captions.

Rubens and Brueghel: A Working Friendship (Getty Trust Publications: J. Paul Getty Museum)

Truly collaborative paintings, that is, not simply mechanical but also conceptual co-productions, are rare in the history of art. This gorgeously illustrated catalogue explores just such an extraordinary partnership between Antwerp's most eminent painters of the early seventeenth century, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625). Rubens and Brueghel executed approximately twenty-five works together between around 1597 and Brueghel's death in 1625. Highly prized and sought after by collectors throughout Europe, the collaborative works of Rubens and Brueghel were distinguished by an extremely high level of quality, further enhanced by the status of the artists themselves.
Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Getty Museum to be held July 5 to September 24, 2006, the catalogue features twenty-six color plates of such Rubens/Brueghel paintings as The Return from War, The Feast of Achelous, and Madonna and Child in a Garland of Flowers, along with Rubens and Brueghel's collaborations with important contemporaries such as Frans Snyders and Hendrick van Balen. This is the first such publication to fully address and reproduce these works in depth.
